Inverness prides itself as the main cultural centre of the north of Scotland. The city is host to a lively programme of music, concert and dance sessions and stages the Highland Games in June each year. The annual award winning Scottish Showtime has been running for 30 years - a fast moving and colourful spectacle of Highland ceilidhs, traditional song, dance and music.
For local heritage, the Museum and Art Gallery is home to archaeological and natural history displays, and the splendid Gothic Inverness Castle hosts the Castle Garrison Encounter – a costume re-enactment of life as an 18th century soldier. The Eden Court Theatre and Cinema offers a wide ranging programme of entertainment, including the staging of the annual Inverness Tattoo.
The city is set in beautiful surroundings amongst parks and gardens, and is a regular winner of Britain in Bloom.
Minutes from the town centre, the National Trust for Scotland’s centre at Culloden vividly interprets the bloody massacre of the Jacobites in the times of Bonnie Prince Charlie, which also witnessed the end of traditional Highland society.
